Getting Around
- GENERAL FACTS ABOUT TRANSPORTS IN LISBON:
Tickets can be purchased in
all buses and at all metro (underground/subway) stations; some metro
stations are manned but they all have vending machines (that often
give change). It is cheaper to buy a carnet of tickets. Carnets of
bus tickets are not sold on the buses. They can be bought at special
selling points (there is one at Campo Pequeno and another one at Sete
Rios). Carnets of metro tickets can be bought at metro stations,
namely from the vending machines.
All sorts of informations about the bus transportation system in Lisbon,
including an interactive route planner,
can be found in the
CARRIS web site.
The
underground (metro) web site also features a network diagram and
many other useful informations.
The Gulbenkian Foundation (ICALP'05 venue), the Instituto Superior Tecnico (Workshops location), and the conference hotels are well served both
by buses and the underground.
A map covering the area from the Gulbenkian Foundation
to the Instituto Superior Técnico is shown below.
Underground stations are marked with a bold red circle;
the stations which are near to the Gulbenkian Foundation are
"Praça de Espanha" and "S. Sebastião".
You may also find there the location of the conference hotels
(framed inside red rectangles).
- INSIDE THE INSTITUTO SUPERIOR TÉCNICO:
Here is a picture of the institute, with the different blocks
numbered. The Congress Centre, where ICALP'05 affiliated workshops
will take place, is building number 2 (marked with a blue dot in the
map). Enter via the North gate, in
Av. Antonio José de Almeida, close to building number 24, on the right
hand side of the picture (marked in the map with a light red dot).
The remaining gates are closed on weekends.
The underground stations closest to IST are "Alameda", the junction of
the red line with the green line, and "Saldanha", in the yellow
line. From either station to IST (which lies in between these
stations) is a ten minutes walk. Both underground stations are marked
in the map (red circles with hollow white centers).

- FROM THE AIRPORT TO THE HOTELS:
- By taxi: A taxi ride from the airport should cost you
around 8/10 Euro, including charges for the luggage carried in the
boot. A taxi can take up to 4 passengers.
- By bus:
| There is a special bus "AERO-BUS" leaving
from the airport's arrivals hall to the City Centre, everyday between 7 am
and 9 pm, and every 20 minutes (see route map on the right). The ticket is around 2.2 Euro and can
be purchased in the bus. This ticket is valid for another bus or tram
ride on the same day.
For hotels Holyday Inn Continental, Vip Zurique, and Berna, you should
leave at "Campo Pequeno" (near the Bull Fight Ring, very easy to
recognise).
For hotels Miraparque and Fénix, you should leave at "Marquês de Pombal".
For hotels Alfa Corinthia, Mercure and Ibis there is no direct bus.
You can take the Aero Bus for "Entrecampos" and change for bus 31.
The bus ride will take you around 10 to 20 minutes depending on
the traffic. |
